About the Centre

Mission

Dartmouth Family Centre promotes the healthy development of families with children prenatal to age six by:

  • providing resources and activities that support the parent-child relationship;
  • providing opportunities to develop supportive relationships with other families; and
  • advocating for changes to the societal conditions that impede the health and well-being of families and communities.

History

  • 1989- The Parent Resource Centre (PRC), located on Wentworth Street in Dartmouth, officially opened its doors. Initially operated by the City of Dartmouth, the Parent Resource Centre was eventually taken over by the NS Department of Community Services (1998).

  • 1993- Community members and organizations came together to talk about creating a resource centre for families in the Dartmouth North area. This group applied for funding through Health Canada and were successful.

  • 1994- As a result, the Dartmouth Family Resource Centre (DFRC) opened its doors on Highfield Park Drive as one of a number of Community Action Program for Children (CAP-C) sites in Nova Scotia.

  • 1999- The Department of Community Services approached the Board of Directors of the Dartmouth Family Resource Centre to ask it to assume the administration of the Parent Resource Centre. On April 1 of that year, the two Centres merged under the Board of DFRC.

  • 2004- The organization’s name was changed to Dartmouth Family Centre and the Highfield Park Drive site moved to 107 Albro Lake Road. This move was the result of years of searching for a location more central and accessible to the families of Dartmouth North.

  • 2005- The Wentworth Street site of Dartmouth Family Centre closed and an enhanced outreach service was developed at the DFC.
